Food-a-Fair – A Spring Day Out!

Food-a-Fair is a spring day out to celebrate the benefits of growing, harvesting, sharing and making food. Everyone is welcome!  Great food, talks on growing produce, and workshops for young and old. See below for activities throughout the day and timetabled activities – you can pre-book for some or simply turn up on the day.

Please note that children must be supervised at all times while in the college, as well as when participating in activities.  Thanks.

Throughout the Day

In the market place: local food growers, makers and traders will be selling their delicious wares, edible goodies and seasonal delights. HollyMartin2-500x409Alongside will be information stands sharing advice food growing, education, catering and volunteering.

In the kitchen: Stepping Lightly and Made by the Chef will take us through some great processing ideas for local food.  These workshops are planned for adults, please book your place at reception on the day.

11.30 – 12.15 Gill Moody – Stepping Lightly: carrot & lentil soup
14.00 – 15.00 Hulya Erdal – Made By The Chef: ‘Preserving methods’
15.30 – 16.30 Hulya Erdal – Made By The Chef: ‘Dolma Making’

In the Deli Café: Hot and cold drinks plus snacks made by the Waltham Forest College Bakery and its students available to purchase all day from 11am – 5pm.  Drop in on the guerrilla seed bomb making workshops hosted by Organic Lea.

There will be a lunch time curry buffet cooked with tender loving care by Star of India.  You can choose from two sittings: 12 – 1pm and 1.15-2.15pm. The cost is £5 per head, please book at reception on the day.

In the lecture theatre:  A range of talks hosted by Organiclea, aimed at adults.
11. 15 – 12.15  “Employment and training opportunities in urban horticulture”
12.30 –  13.30  “Plant a vine – Grow your own Wine”
13.45 – 14.45  “Getting more local food onto our plates – a guide for buyers and growers”
15.00 –  16.15  “Fruits of the Forest: mapping the borough’s fruit growing and making future plans”

Sessions and Workshops

11-1pm   Plant Dye Printing with Anna Alcock from Inky Cuttlefish and Plant Marker Making  with Michelle Reader. Open to all, these workshops are walk in/out, but if the room is full, it’s full!  (Carers must accompany children at all times thank you)

12.30 Kids Kitchen  Kids and their parents/carers cook savoury mini 2013-05-17 10.26.56tarts from scratch, making pastry and filling.  We’ll cook enough for a small lunch for your child and sit down to eat together.  Planned for under 5’s but older siblings very welcome – carers must accompany children at all times thank you!  You can book here – there will also be some places available on the day.

12-2pm: Secret Seed Society will be planting seeds.  Open to all ages, book a space for 12, or 1pm,  or just sign up at reception on the day.  Carers must accompany children at all times thank you!chrissie-waving-216x300

2-4 pm: Edible Films: A short film competition Launching at Food-a-Fair! It aims to spark a food revolution amongst young people; inviting micro movie entries made and shared via phone power. Drop in on the day or you can pre-book  at 2pm or 3pm.  Aimed at children of all ages.  Carers must accompany children at all times thank you!

2-4pm  Windowbox Wonderland with Transition Leytonstone.  Growing in a small space. Aimed at adults, Book a space here or just sign up at reception on the day.
